Contrast Photography: Professional Youth Sports Photography

Todd and I have been wanting to shoot team pictures, specifically football or ice hockey, inside a locker room for years. Today I finally had my chance, as I chased the light outdoors until the very end and was forced inside with a full team left to shoot.

What do I do? That’s top secret and I’d have to kill you if I told you…but I LOVE the look of the green Rhino uniforms against the killer red lockers!!!

What do you think abut these portraits? I shot these with a single Nikon SB-900 speed-light to camera left. Next time I’ll see if I can drop in a hair light camera right, but I’m not sure if that would give me a better image than this. Nikon’s flagship SB-900 is a phenomenal tool!!! Yeah it’s a little expensive at $499 but well worth the investment. Combined with the Nikon D300, I can’t ask for a better system of which to make great images of all these kids.

Of course I have all these great ideas running through my head now!!

Contrast Photography and our professional staff is looking forward to working with Vic Doda and his South Baltimore Youth Soccer League (SBYSL) again in 2008. We’ve been working with the SBYSL since we opened the Maryland office, and these kids (and parents) are a blast.

Photo Day this year is Saturday, October 11th at the field. Check back here in a few days as we are currently working on the Photo Day schedule and will be posting it online.

TIP: Please complete your order form BEFORE you show up at the field. We’ll have plenty of samples available for you to view but to keep on schedule we’ll need you to go ahead and complete your child’s name, age, height, weight, and the address information BEFORE you arrive at the field.

Our digital “Memory Mate” is an 8×10 composite that contain the team AND individual portrait and is included in ALL packages (A-G) on the left hand side. We also offer magazine covers, mouse pads, buttons, keychains, really cool trading cards, bag tags and MORE!!!

We admit it, at Contrast Photography, we’re big fans of the Oxon Hill Road Runner (Oxon Hill Boys & Girls Club). Maybe it’s the cool colors that mimic our Contrast blue and yellow. Oxon Hill is part of the Prince Georges County Boys and Girls Club program.

It’s also because Oxon Hill is one of our first (possibly our first???) Maryland based client. We started working with their track and field program in 2003 and through the years we worked with the soccer, basketball, football and cheerleading programs and for 2008 we’re providing our brand of customized and personalized photo products to all of the OHBGC athletic programs.

We’ve been working with the Enon Eagles since they started their Athletic Ministry. Michael Brown runs the Enon Eagles Pop Warner program and does a fantastic job.

It’s nice seeing these kids grow up in sports and in the church, especially since I’ve seen a lot of these kids since the very beginning.

We’ve been working with the Plymouth Whitemarsh football program since 2002, proving team and individual service in addition to game action services (specifically for their seniors). PW has one of (if not the) best fields in the Philadelphia area. We photographed the full team, all the individuals as well as each class (Seniors, Juniors, etc). The Parents Club will use the images in the program and on the PW website.

Today was our Fall Sports Training Session and we had a FULL staff of photographers, sales associates and assistants at the field early to over our plans for the season.

In post production I’m testing out a new process, some will know this as the “Dave Hill” look…pioneered by photographer DAVE HILL

This was the first time I’ve shot RAW files in a LONG time, but it makes the conversion of the files a bit easier since all of the raw data is still there for us to manipulate. I LOVE this look and we’ll probably try to incorporate this into some new products this fall. Let me know what you think about it….
